I am Kobus Groen. For over 15 years I have been a professional bass player, bandleader, arranger, theory nerd and teacher. I consider myself a musician that primarily tries to facilitate the artist/act in the best way possible. Meaning I find it a lot more important to know what a song needs than to be able to play the fastest slap solo in the world. Of course you need to have a flawless technique and some chops but in my lessons a lot of focus is also on: 'what is going on around me?', 'what is the singer doing?', 'what are other instruments playing and how can I anticipate on that?'
I strongly belief that these considerations are what makes the difference between a desirable player (someone that other people want to play with) and someone that knows a few tricks but never leaves his bedroom.
